WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THERAPY AND COACHING?
Therapy helps you understand why you are struggling and allows you to explore past hurtful experiences. Throughout the therapeutic process the goal is to help the individual/family/couple explore their background and life experiences to gain insight and understanding regarding current life struggles. Coaching focuses on current goals and helps an individual determine a planĀ and develop the tools and perspective to execute their goals. Think of trying to clean out your garage; you know how you want it to look but have no idea how to get it all accomplished. Coaching provides a personal assistant to help empower an individual to reach their highest potential and embrace their future with confidence and enthusiasm.
Note to Parents!
In my clinical experience, the most effective means of bringing about behavioral changes with children is the combination of in-office therapy along with in-home behavior coaching. The collaboration between therapist, coach, and parents can greatly increase the ability for the child to implement the tools that are learned within the therapy session. The parents who have followed this treatment plan have seen a more rapid change with greater understanding and longevity. It costs a little more, but the benefits are priceless!
